Frequently Asked Questions - Installation & Warranty

Questions relating to installation, support
and warranty following the enquiry stage

The questions below refer to cat flaps, although in most cases they can equally apply to dog doors

How long does it take to fit a cat flap?

A plain door or flat door panel will take around 45 minutes to an hour, with profiled and panelled doors adding about 30 minutes to that. Microchip cat flaps in metal skinned doors take about 2 hours. Glass requires two visits of 10 to 15 minutes to measure, and then generally around an hour to fit when the glass has been manufactured (see seperate FAQ). A wall takes around 3 hours from arrival to completion

How long does it take to manufacture a double glazed unit?

Since the pandemic and our departure from Europe, glass manufacturing times have increased dramatically, mainly down to supply issues. It is currently taking around 10, but up to 15 working days to have a unit made. This may improve during 2022 as the UK based sheet glass manufacturers restart their plants after being shutdown for extensive maintenance

How soon can you fit my cat flap once agreed?

Usually within a few days, although it depends on what type of fitting it is, where you are located, how busy I am, and finally the weather. I can usually fit a glass measure in very quickly and can install it soon after it has been manufactured (see separate FAQ in this section). A wall requires a dry day, and takes up a large part of it once travel time is included. Other types can be grouped together. I cover a huge area across large parts of Kent, Surrey and Sussex, so I have to consider travel time and costs. I try to group work within an area or schedule a continuous travel arc across a wider area. Day to day I have little control over the amount of work I get. If there's a big sporting or similar event on the TV, then it can be very quiet. Soon after it can get pretty hectic for a while. So while Wimbledon is on, it'll be smart to organise your cat flap. October is usually the busiest month of the year, as people want to shut the garden door that's been open all summer. Walls require a dry day as mentioned. Other than that I work in most weather, as long as it is reasonable

I was once contacted, quoted for a cat flap, went out and fitted it, and was paid in less than two hours. Sometimes I get an enquiry from where I have already scheduled work and can fit it in that same day. I try my best to complete work on a first come first serve basis, with travel in mind. Being widely available for a fitting helps greatly. For some reason, those who insist that work is done yesterday are always the most disappointed

What guarantees do you provide?

Being self-employed and dealing with customers in their homes, I am covered by Public Liability insurance up to a value of £1 million. Most companies and tradesmen will take out and be covered by a similar policy, but surprisingly it is not a legal requirement. I have never had to make a claim against that policy, but it gives peace of mind to both myself and my customers

The warranty on any cat flaps that I supply is provided by the manufacturer. Typically this is 3 years, but this may require product registration to receive cover beyond the first year. The receipt or invoice will generally be required. This is the same if the cat flap was bought through other retail channels. This warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of the product itself, and not for its replacement fitting

I guarantee my workmanship for a period of 12 months from the day of the fitting. In reality I never leave a job that I am not 100% satisfied with, and will return within that period to rectify any issues that I may have inadvertently missed at the time. This is something I have not had to do in all of my years of working. In addition, I may be able to negotiate the cost of refitting any inherently faulty product with the manufacturer involved. In reality the major brands that I use are very reliable and so this is unlikey. If you supply the cat flap my guarantee is limited to my actual workmanship, with everything else down to you

The guarantee for any glass that I provide will be defined in a separate FAQ

Will any glass that you supply be as good as from elsewhere?

Only a few large companies will manufacture their own double glazed units, with the rest being supplied by specialists who support the wider building and glazing industry. All my glass is sourced from such a company, which has been in the business for over 25 years. They produce my double glazed units to British Standard EN 1279 Part 2 & 3, just as they do for many other companies, with the same 5 year guarantee on their units

I specify an additional thermal coating on all of my glass by default. This helps to keep your home warmer and protects your furniture from the fading effects of UV light. This is generally equal to or greater than the glass it replaces. If you know that your glass has a higher specification, such as an advanced coating or is argon gas filled, then I can add this to the order and price for it accordingly
